Dryer Airflow and Fire Safety: A Homeowner Checklist

A clean lint screen is only one part of dryer airflow. The duct also needs attention. Longer drying times can warn of restriction. Keep maintenance within safe access limits and get professional help for inaccessible ducts, cabinet interiors, damaged venting, or recurrent overheating.

Between Loads

  • Clean the lint screen as directed.
  • Keep clutter away.
  • Notice changes in drying time or heat.

Exhaust Maintenance

CPSC identifies lint buildup and restricted exhaust as fire concerns. Arrange inspection for inaccessible, crushed, or obstructed ducts. Follow installation instructions for appropriate materials.

Stop Rather Than Compensate

Do not repeatedly extend cycles for unexplained poor performance. Stop for burning smells or excessive heat. Smoke or fire requires leaving and emergency help. Never run disconnected exhaust indoors.
